L'étymologie de Sphaerotholus est une combinaison du grec sphaira , qui signifie "boule", et tholos , qui signifie "dôme",. Comme ses parents de la famille Pachycephalosauria, avait une calotte renforcée mais exceptionnellement arrondie, à laquelle il doit son nom.
